About us
NSM Lab Poland is an independent academic research group based at Kazimierz Wielki University (UKW) in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Our core mission is to investigate cross-cultural semantics, cognitive linguistics, and the universal properties of human communication.
Grounded in the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) framework pioneered by Professor Anna Wierzbicka and Professor Cliff Goddard, our lab is modeled after the primary global research hub located at the Australian National University (ANU). We maintain active global cooperation with leading scholars specializing in NSM and related frameworks worldwide, exploring how different languages conceptualize emotions, values, social relationships, and other fundamental dimensions of human life. By combining linguistic analysis with an interest in cultural diversity, philosophy, psychology, cognition, and related disciplines, we seek to understand better what people across cultures share and how their ways of thinking and communicating differ.
